Carrot Country - Heirs to Innovation
Recently, we were selected to be the cover story in Carrot Country! In addition to potatoes and onions, carrots are the third vegetable crop that we grow here at Gumz Farms. Unlike potatoes and onions, however, we do not pack our carrots; they get shipped straight to local canneries after harvest. To learn more about our history, carrot production, and our operation in general, check us out in this fall's issue!

TIME.com recently posted a new list of the 50 Healthiest Foods of All Time. Included in that list are three crops that we grow: potatoes (although not purple as outlined in the article), mint, and carrots. Here's why they made the list:
It's time to get schooled on the many benefits of potatoes! Earlier this fall, the United States Potato Board released a press release to kick off the school year and educate students about the nutrition of potatoes. According to a National Eating Trends Survey, potatoes are America's favorite side dish, which is good news, because the potatoes you love are good for you, too!

Lately, you may have seen post shares about The Pioneer Woman on Facebook, Twitter, and more. She describes herself in her blog as "a desperate housewife [who] lives in the country. [She] channels Lucille Ball, Vivien Leigh, and Ethel Merman." She also just released a line of cookware at WalMart, super cute with a rustic and county feel; be sure to check it out if you're looking for updating your kitchen style. Anyway, I found a recipe for Perfect Potato Soup on her blog; it's an older post, but the recipe looks AMAAAZING. It calls for peeled russet potatoes, but I am sure you can get away with leaving the skins on your favorite Gumz Farms red potatoes! Check out the recipe, accompanied with step by step instructions, here:| Perfect Potato Soup (Image borrowed from The Pioneer Woman's blog)
We finally were able to start getting out in the fields last week and this week! These two awesome shots were taken by a couple of our employees out and about in the fields. We've got some spring fever being able to work the soil and get it ready for crops... planting season will be here before we know it! For those of you who aren't familiar with our operation, we grow and pack our own red potatoes and yellow onions, carrots for canning, mint for regional and national distributors, field corn, and soybeans.
While on the subject of working the soil, we've been getting the question "what is muck?" a lot lately. All of the fields here at Gumz Farms are muck soil; muck is a dark, rich soil that is high in organic content. We need to take care of our fields as muck doesn't drain very well on it's own. So one of our projects every spring is to make sure that all of our drain tile is still functioning correctly. Additionally, when it rains a lot, muck gets very, very sticky. So, we use a lot of equipment on tracks (as you can see in the photo below to the right) and equipment with dual or triple tires. This allows more surface area to spread out the weight to allow us to "float" on the soil. If we don't do this, our equipment operators get stuck. You learn something new every day! Let us know if you have any other questions! We are here to educate and share our story. P.S. GO BUCKY!!! |
