Recently, we were selected to be the cover story in Carrot Country! In addition to potatoes and onions, carrots are the third vegetable crop that we grow here at Gumz Farms. Unlike potatoes and onions, however, we do not pack our carrots; they get shipped straight to local canneries after harvest. To learn more about our history, carrot production, and our operation in general, check us out in this fall's issue!

Happy National Milk Day!

1/11/2016

Today is National Milk Day! According to the National Milk Producers Federation, "today we commemorate the day when milk started being delivered in sterilized glass bottles way back in 1878. Milk (which has nine essential nutrients) is used to create a wide variety of other dairy products, like cheese, yogurt, sour cream, butter, and ice cream."

In honor of National Milk Day, we decided to post our #FarmFreshFriday recipe early this week and support the dairy industry with some Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes (<--- click for the recipe). How can you go wrong with potatoes and milk? Enjoy!

The 50 (New) Healthiest Foods of All Time

12/15/2015

TIME.com recently posted a new list of the 50 Healthiest Foods of All Time. Included in that list are three crops that we grow: potatoes (although not purple as outlined in the article), mint, and carrots. Here's why they made the list:

Purple Potatoes
"Like all spud varieties, purple potatoes are rich in potassium—which is needed for blood pressure management. What’s special about purple potatoes are their color, which comes from anthocyanin, a potent antioxidant that poses numerous health benefits like a lower risk for cardiovascular disease."

Cooking Tip: When preparing purple potatoes, be sure to maintain their color, which carries the antioxidants. Roasting is a great method to contain all of these nutrients while boiling will cook out most of the antioxidants.

Mint
"The aromatic herb has compounds in its leaves that have been used for centuries to treat digestive issues. Mint is also thought to have antimicrobial effects and antiviral effects, and is a soothing herb with unique flavor for cooking and for drinks. There are many different kinds, from spearmint to apple mint."

At Gumz Farms, we raise spearmint and peppermint. We distill the mint into an oil and it gets distributed to be used in toothpaste, gum, pharmaceutical products, and more!

Carrots
"Carrots have long been a go-to veggie, but did you know that they come in many different colors like reds, purples and yellow? Standard orange carrots contain vitamin A, which is essential for healthy sight. Colorful carrots also contain other healthy antioxidants like lycopene and beta-carotene pigment. Lycopene is the same pigment that gives tomatoes their bright red, and it’s linked to a lower risk of certain cancers."

The carrots that we grow at Gumz Farms are called slicers and dicers, which get sent to canning factories for processing.

It's time to get schooled on the many benefits of potatoes! Earlier this fall, the United States Potato Board released a press release to kick off the school year and educate students about the nutrition of potatoes. According to a National Eating Trends Survey, potatoes are America's favorite side dish, which is good news, because the potatoes you love are good for you, too!

Perfect Potato Soup #FarmFreshFriday

11/13/2015

Lately, you may have seen post shares about The Pioneer Woman on Facebook, Twitter, and more. She describes herself in her blog as "a desperate housewife [who] lives in the country. [She] channels Lucille Ball, Vivien Leigh, and Ethel Merman." She also just released a line of cookware at WalMart, super cute with a rustic and county feel; be sure to check it out if you're looking for updating your kitchen style. Anyway, I found a recipe for Perfect Potato Soup on her blog; it's an older post, but the recipe looks AMAAAZING. It calls for peeled russet potatoes, but I am sure you can get away with leaving the skins on your favorite Gumz Farms red potatoes! Check out the recipe, accompanied with step by step instructions, here:|

Lately, the driving force behind the WPVGA (Wisconsin Potato & Vegetable Growers Assocation) has been all about local, sustainable potatoes and vegetables. Check out their latest blog post, Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin Grant and In-Store Promotions for Healthy Grown® Potatoes, to learn more about those programs.

In addition to the WPVGA's efforts, we at Gumz Farms are going to implement #FarmFreshFriday. We will find and share healthy recipes that feature locally grown vegetables, like our own #farmfresh potatoes, onions, and carrots!  This week, we found an awesome list of baked potato recipes for you to try! Thanks to BuzzFeed Staffer, Ariel Knutson for compliling this fantastic list!

Spring Fever 2015

4/6/2015

We finally were able to start getting out in the fields last week and this week! These two awesome shots were taken by a couple of our employees out and about in the fields. We've got some spring fever being able to work the soil and get it ready for crops... planting season will be here before we know it! For those of you who aren't familiar with our operation, we grow and pack our own red potatoes and yellow onions, carrots for canning, mint for regional and national distributors, field corn, and soybeans.

While on the subject of working the soil, we've been getting the question "what is muck?" a lot lately. All of the fields here at Gumz Farms are muck soil; muck is a dark, rich soil that is high in organic content. We need to take care of our fields as muck doesn't drain very well on it's own. So one of our projects every spring is to make sure that all of our drain tile is still functioning correctly. Additionally, when it rains a lot, muck gets very, very sticky. So, we use a lot of equipment on tracks (as you can see in the photo below to the right) and equipment with dual or triple tires. This allows more surface area to spread out the weight to allow us to "float" on the soil. If we don't do this, our equipment operators get stuck.

You learn something new every day! Let us know if you have any other questions! We are here to educate and share our story.

P.S. GO BUCKY!!!
